Splendour In The Grass @ Belongil Fields, Byron Bay (Sat 20 Jul – Sun 21 Jul 2002)
Splendour #2 was upon us. Once again, the lineup was slowly trickled out through the street press and radio. This year, for the first time, Spledour was over 2 days. Yee-HA!
And once again, Wade and I made our way down the M1 to Byron Bay. The E20 once more did the drive superbly, and once again proved itself as being more than capable of being the lounge/bedroom/kitchen/home away from home.
I remember the campground had some improvements that year, or was it ’03? The lights that went down the laneways were really ornate for one year… was it 02?
The memories of the bands are hazy. I remember seeing Drag and thinking they were OK. They had that song (“Thanks for your time” or something like that) that had got a bit of airplay on JJJ. You Am I, Grinspoon & Gomez were all awesome. Gomez in particular were on fire.
On the Sunday I remember seeing Sonic Animation, Paul Mac, Doves, John Butler Trio and Supergrass. I’m not a John Butler fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I was really impressed with the live show. There was also a (presumably) intoxicated guy that climbed up a safety rope and up to the top of the big-top tent. It took security about 20 minutes to get him down, and it was a good distraction from JBT as we waited for Supergrass. As expected, Supergrass were sensational.
Throughout the festival I caught up with Vickie, a friend of mine from college who was also there. Her friend Melissa was with her, and as the weekend progressed it became apparent that Mel thought my mate Wade was a bit of alright. Turns out Wade thought the same of Mel. So long story short- they hooked up on the Sunday night after Supergrass and got married a few years ago, and now the four of us go to Splendour every year together.
At time of writing (2010), Vickie and I are the only two people I know of who have been to every single Splendour. I’m sure there are more out there, I just haven’t met them yet.
